Reflections and thoughts on the song 'Nothing New' by Taylor Swift - feat Phoebe Bridgers.

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

I feel I have to admit that the whole album has me in a chokehold before I begin writing this post, and I am a fan of both Taylor and Phoebe. When I first listened to it, I felt a weird sort of connection to it, as someone who struggles with their mental health, and is a first year uni student, It seems to speak to me. the whole idea that in society, women constantly need to be perceived as interesting, and that often means we feel a need to reinvent ourselves, especially famous women.

I am 19, so am still young, but teenagers are glamorised and the emotional development people undergo is seen as an acceptable way to react as teenagers and then quickly dismissed as emotional women as we get older.

Nothing New is written for overly emotional, oldest daughters, self aware people who like to criticise themselves, however justify being overly critical as a means to better themselves. People who grew up to fast and mourn the childhood they should've had. When you drink too much and question how loveable you are.

Nothing New is for people who0 fall in love to quickly and too hard, and always get hurt, but romanticise love so much that they will do it again.

It is a beautiful song and is very eloquent. It is tender, but strong and shows some flaws in our society, but also flaws in ourselves.
